Why Some PM Surya Ghar Applications Get Stuck, and How to Avoid It
A study found that less than a quarter of PM Surya Ghar applications had turned into installations. Here are the common delays and how to avoid them.

PM Surya Ghar has made rooftop solar affordable for millions of families, but not every application reaches installation smoothly. A December 2025 analysis by IEEFA found that only about 22.7% of applications had turned into completed installations at that point.
Where applications slow down
Approvals and net meters: the scheme aims for a 30-day approval window, but the study found real timelines of 45 to 120 days, often due to meter shortages and poor coordination between vendors and DISCOMs.
Financing: public sector bank loans cost around 7 to 8% but can be slow, while faster NBFC loans cost 10 to 14%.
Panel supply: subsidised systems must use domestically made (DCR) panels, which cost more and are sometimes in short supply.
Portal and vendor issues: errors on the portal and inconsistent installation quality delay subsidies and hurt trust.
How to avoid getting stuck
Choose an experienced, registered vendor who files applications correctly the first time.
Keep your documents ready: electricity bill, Aadhaar, bank details and proof of ownership.
Ask your installer how they follow up with the DISCOM for approval and the net meter.
Confirm that the panels quoted are DCR-approved, so your subsidy isn't rejected.
