50 Lakh Indian Homes Have Gone Solar, and 19 Lakh Now Pay Zero Electricity Bills
India's rooftop solar scheme has crossed 50 lakh households, with around 19 lakh reporting zero electricity bills. Could your home be next?

India's rooftop solar programme passed a major milestone in August 2026: more than 50 lakh households now have rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar, adding up to 14.8 GW of capacity. For comparison, the whole country installed only about 7.9 lakh rooftop systems in the ten years before the scheme began.
The number that matters most: zero bills
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, nearly 19 lakh households now report a zero electricity bill. That happens when a home's solar system produces as many units as the family uses over the billing period, with net metering balancing day and night.
July 2026 was also the scheme's busiest month so far, with over 5 lakh homes installing solar in a single month. Rooftop solar is no longer an experiment; it has become a normal choice for Indian families.
Can your home reach a zero bill?
It depends on three things: your monthly units, your shade-free roof space, and a correctly sized system. Many homes in Uttar Pradesh can cut their bill by up to 90%, and some reach zero.
